African Canadian Farmers Society (AFCFS) – Community Farm School, Surrey, British Columbia
Program Duration: 12 Months
Reporting To: Project Coordinator and Farm Manager
Compensation:
– $3,300 per month (Full-time)
Purpose: This role connects the Society with the broader community, local markets, and knowledge networks. The SME conducts research, builds partnerships, and identifies opportunities for market access, community engagement, and culturally relevant agricultural practices.
Key Responsibilities
• Conduct research on sustainable cropping, African / Black diaspora food traditions, and local market trends.
• Map and engage community stakeholders, including farmers, cultural groups, schools, and food organizations.
• Identify and develop market channels for cooperative produce, such as farmers’ markets, CSA boxes, and restaurants.
• Support curriculum development for training programs.
• Gather data on community needs, food access gaps, and economic opportunities.
• Represent the Society at community events and meetings.
• Provide insights to guide crop selection, value-added products, and strategic planning.
Required Qualifications & Experience
• Background (diploma, bachelor’s degree, or certifications) in market research, business development, agriculture, or community engagement.
• Strong analytical and research skills.
• Ability to build relationships and partnerships across diverse groups.
• Understanding of Black / African diaspora foodways is an asset.
