African Canadian Farmers Society (AFCFS) – Community Farm School, Surrey, British Columbia
Program Duration: 12 Months

Compensation:
– $30 per hour x 20 hours per week (Part-time)
– $20 per hour (Full-time)
Purpose: This role supports community food security programming while also leading greenhouse and nursery crop production activities tied to African heritage crops and culturally responsive training. It bridges community outreach, produce distribution, and practical grower education within the Community Farm School program.
Key Responsibilities
• Coordinate community food security programs, including seasonal community feasts, food events, and workshops for Black and African diaspora community members in Surrey.
• Organize produce distribution through community channels, including WhatsApp networks, and strengthen partnerships with local grocers, multicultural food retailers, and community organizations.
• Serve as a liaison between the training farm and the broader Black community to ensure programs remain culturally relevant, and that produce reaches food-insecure families.
• Lead African heritage crop production, including practical instruction on crops such as okra, bitter leaf, African eggplant, and moringa suited to the Lower Mainland climate.
• Work directly with trainees during vocational farming sessions and guide crop experiments, planting schedules, soil conditions, irrigation, and crop performance.
• Track and document crop adaptation outcomes and contribute to learning materials, toolkits, and final program reports.
Required Skills & Experience
• Experience in community services, food security coordination, horticulture, greenhouse operations, nursery crop production, or related programming.
• Ability to work directly with community members, trainees, and partner organizations in a culturally responsive environment.
• Practical knowledge of crop production, soil conditions, irrigation, and seasonal growing practices is highly valuable.
• Strong documentation, coordination, and communication skills.
Required Qualifications & Experience
• Diploma, bachelor’s degree, or relevant certification in agriculture, business administration, program management, environmental studies, social sciences, or a related field.
• Experience in farm management, program coordination, community development, or project management.
• Strong organizational, planning, and leadership abilities.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a community-driven environment.
• Demonstrated experience supervising volunteers, trainees, or community participants.
• Familiarity with Black / African diaspora communities and culturally relevant agriculture is considered an asset.
• Knowledge of sustainable agriculture and small-scale farming practices is highly desirable.
