Meet the First Cohort of the ACFS Agricultural Training Program

The African-Canadian Farmers Society (ACFS) on June 2, 2026, welcomed the first cohort participants into the Foundation for Black Communities – National Food System Initiative Program.

The program brings together eight aspiring farmers from Ghana, The Gambia, Kenya, and Nigeria who share a passion for agriculture and a desire to build practical farming skills while contributing to a more diverse and resilient food system in British Columbia.

The journey began with an orientation session where participants met the project team, learned about the program’s vision, objectives, and expectations, and were introduced to the exciting learning experience ahead. The session also provided an opportunity for participants to connect with one another, ask questions, and begin building relationships that will support them throughout the program. 

The Foundation For Black Communities – National Food System Initiative Program was established to help develop the next generation of Black farmers in British Columbia by providing participants with practical agricultural knowledge, hands-on farming experience, mentorship, and business development support. 

The 8 months (June 2026 – Feb 2027) program combines classroom instruction with hands-on farm training, with particular emphasis on sustainable farming practices and the cultivation of culturally appropriate crops that reflect the diverse food traditions of Black communities. Our goal is to help participants develop practical farming skills while promoting food security, environmental stewardship, and long-term opportunities in agriculture.

Over the course of eight months (June 2026 – February 2027), participants will gain practical experience across the entire crop production cycle — from land preparation and planting to crop management, harvesting, marketing, and the sale of agricultural produce. By the end of the program, participants will have developed both the technical and entrepreneurial skills needed to pursue opportunities in agriculture with greater confidence.
